Playgroup Tasmania acknowledges that we live, work and play on Aboriginal land, land of the palawa people of lutruwita (Tasmania). We pay our respects to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, to elders past and present and to all those who continue caring for country, sharing stories and upholding rights.

Make a Bee Hotel

Can't attend a Children's Week event in person?

Here's an activity you can do at home – or anywhere – using items found in your backyard or your local park.

Bees are tiny superheroes for our planet. They help to make our food grow by collecting nectar and spreading their pollen. Bees also help make places where other creatures can live. When bees visit flowers and plants, they make the environment healthy and lively for all kinds of animals.

How to build a Bee Hotel

Materials you'll need.

Twigs, pinecones, stems, dried leaves, rocks and other wonderful natural objects from your garden. You could also add old wooden crates or boxes and other recycled objects.

Instructions

1. Prepare the base, sides and roof of the hotel — Use a steady object like a piece of wood or carboard roll as your base, build your sides and roof of your house.

2. Assemble the hotel — Stack sticks, hollow stems, carboard tubes and other natural objects in your bee hotel. Fill the gaps with pinecones or other natural objects.

3. Hang your bee hotel — Hang your bee hotel in a tree or post in a sheltered area in your garden. Bees will especially love it if the hotel has some flowers nearby.

Playgroup Tasmania would love to see your created Bee Hotel, the most creative and fun bee hotel will win a prize!
