Playgroup Tasmania is committed to promoting and protecting the safety and wellbeing of all children. Everyone has a role to play in keeping children safe from harm and creating child safe and child friendly communities.
Playgroup Tasmania acknowledges that we live, work and play on Aboriginal land, land of the palawa people of lutruwita (Tasmania). We pay our respects to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community, to elders past and present and to all those who continue caring for country, sharing stories and upholding rights.
Hi everyone,
My name is Sonya, and I am Tasmania’s new Commissioner for Children and Young People.
I am so happy that one of my first acts as Commissioner is to be able to write this message, helping welcome you to the 2026 Children’s Week program.
This website is packed with over 80 events happening all around Lutruwita / Tasmania. I hope that you can join in, learn, and have fun all around our beautiful island home.
This year’s Children’s Week theme – “Children have the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practise their religion” – brings to life Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Article 30 says that all children have the right to speak their own language and to follow their family’s way of life.
This is a special right to remember and celebrate, because our vibrant Tasmanian community is made up of people from many countries, of many faiths and cultures, who speak many languages.
Children’s Week is a wonderful time for everyone – children, young people, and adults alike – to be curious and to learn new things from their fellow Tasmanians.
I wish all Tasmanian children and young people, their families and communities, a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding Children’s Week, filled with laughter and learning.
Sonya Pringle-Jones
Commissioner for Children and Young People
