A message from the Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People

Isabelle Crompton

It’s time for one of the most important events of the year - National Children’s Week!

This year’s theme, Everyone should know about children’s rights, is inspired by Article 42 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child.

Article 42 says that all children and adults should know about children’s rights. And governments should make sure they tell everyone about children’s rights in an appropriate and active way.

This is true because everyone has a role to play in supporting, enabling and respecting children’s rights.

Each year, Children’s Week provides everyone with an opportunity to learn more about children’s rights, by encouraging participation in the kinds of wonderful events listed on this website.

For example, if children and young people attend one of the Teddy Bears Picnic events to be held around the state, they will be claiming their Article 31 right to rest, relax and play. (And there’ll be Teddy Bears. What a bonus!)

If they join in the Gaming Meetup at Launceston Library, they will be claiming their Article 15 right to spend time with friends and meet up in groups. Ready player one?!

And if they head along to the Pizza Garden Family Day in the Derwent Valley, they’ll be claiming their rights to healthy food and a clean environment (Articles 24 and 27).

For my part, I’ll be getting to as many events as I can, including the Children’s Week Celebration in Civic Square in Launceston on 23 October where I hope to meet lots of children and young people to hear their views and ideas. Why not come along and say hello?

I wish all Tasmanian children and young people, their families and communities, a safe, enjoyable and rewarding Children’s Week.
